THOSE PESKY RULES Rules are not fun, but they do make the cabin more enjoyable for all our guests - so here they are: The cabin is clean. Please keep it that way. Pine needles and sap are murder on carpet; Use the mats to wipe your shoes and keep the carpet nice for everyone. We can wash the mats! Better yet, bring your slippers and leave your shoes at the door. It is extremely important that you flush nothing but human waste and toilet paper down the toilets. That is all the septic system can handle. Please NO Kleenex, diapers, tampons, paper towels or sanitary napkins in the toilet. Dispose of those items in the trash. That's right - not even Kleenex. Absolutely no smoking No pets - sorry - not everyone's pet is as well trained as yours and we have no way of knowing who has the disobedient ones! Keep warm, but please don't waste gas. If you are in the middle of reading a book when it is time to leave - take it with you! But please mail it back to us when you finish. You are welcome to use the spa, but you must indicate that you wish to use it when you make your reservations. You will be provided with instructions, chemicals, and the key to unlock the spa cover. Trash -- Keep it inside or put it in the covered metal can outside - there are trash bags provided - Do NOT invite bears and racoons to our home by putting trash outdoors other than in the metal can. They are NOT friendly!!! Please observe the quiet hours of the Meadowmont community between 10 pm and 8 am. No loud music, boisterous behavior etc. Many of your neighbors are full time residents. This is their home. Please treat the neighborhood with respect. There is a phone in the cabin. You can make local calls only. We suggest that you puchase a prepaid calling card at your local grocery or drug store if you want to make other than local calls. You can receive calls but cannot receive collect calls. If you have a cell phone, we know that Verizon works. Most other cell carriers do not work, so don't count on your cell. There is a pay phone in town at the Big Trees Market. The locked closets and cabinets and dressers? Those are where our family stores personal belongings. (several kitchen cabinets, the entry closet, the extra cabinets in the master bath, and the mirrored wardrobes.) Please don't touch. |
WHEN YOU ARRIVE As soon as you arrive, open the water heater closet (outside near the front door) with the key that is on the kitchen counter. Turn up the water heater to WARM, lock the closet and replace the key on the counter. Open the little door to the thermostat in the living room, and push the RUN button. If needed, you can adjust the pre set temperatures with the up and down arrows. Turn the heat down to 50 (but not off) when you are not home and when you vacate. Use the down arrow until you reach 50, then push the HOLD button. Pressing RUN will go back to the preset temperatures. The furnace is large and heats the cabin rapidly. The gas stove can also heat the entire cabin. |
IN THE KITCHEN Our water is very very soft. Use no more than 1 Tablespoon of dishwasher detergent in the dishwasher. Use only dish soap or soft scrub and a sponge on the stove. Do not scrape the stovetop with any tool or with any SOS or Brillo type pad. You can put the drip pans in the dishwasher if you wish. If you wipe up spills after each meal, nothing will burn on. Leave the oven for us to clean. You may wipe spills with a sponge or paper towel -- but do not scrape! Please use the cutting boards in the kitchen. Do not chop or cut on the tile. |
WINTER Arnold weather reports and a webcam, thanks to a neighbor, are available at www.arnoldweather.com After a snowfall the roads in Arnold are usually plowed rapidly. You may NOT park on the street when snowplows are due. Park in the driveway. You are required to carry chains during the snow season. The driveway will be plowed for your arrival if necessary, but it is a down slope. Especially in winter, but even in the summer, if you park more than one car in the driveway, we suggest that they both face the same direction. That way no one has to back out. If the electricity goes off (it happens!), there are two battery powered lanterns in the cupboard above the stove. There are candles in the kitchen cupboard and two small oil lamps. There is a flashlight in each bedroom. The furnace will not work during a power outage, but the gas stove in the living room will; so you will stay warm, and the barbecue works so you can cook. |
WARNING - FOR YOUR SAFETY Do not use the living room stove and the gas barbecue at the same time. Turn off the stove before lighting the barbecue. If the barbecue is running, the stove can draw carbon monoxide from the barbecue into the living area. |
WHEN IT IS TIME TO LEAVE: When you leave, do not make the beds! Turn down the covers on each bed that you used so that we know which beds need to be changed. Put all used towels in the laundry basket and leave in it one of the bathrooms. The basket is in the master bedroom closet. If you accidently break something leave a note on the dining table explaining what needs repair or replacement. Yes, there might be a deduction from your deposit, but there will be an extra charge if you don't tell us and we have to make a special trip for a repair or replacement. If you use all of something (toilet paper, sugar, cocoa, etc.) please leave a note so that we can replenish it for the next guest. Empty all the waste baskets into a trash bag. Tie the trash bag(s) securely, put in the metal can, and close the trash can holder securely. If you have more trash than will fit in the can, you must take it with you or drop it off at the transfer station (dump). The transfer station is located just off Hwy 4 outside of Avery. As you enter Avery take the first left and follow the signs. It's an easy trip of about 4 miles and an easy facility to use. Run the dishwasher so that it finishes its cycle before you leave. (No heat dry is a faster cycle.) Lock all windows and doors. Turn thermostat to 50 and press HOLD. Be sure that the living room stove, the oven and the barbecue are off. Turn the water heater to vacation and lock the water heater closet. Leave the key on the counter. Turn out all lights and turn off all ceiling fans. Close all blinds. If it is winter, you may be given additional closing instructions. Please follow them exactly. |
MOST IMPORTANTLY --- While you are here, relax, explore the area, and have fun. Depending on the season you can take walks ( be sure to check out Big Trees State Park), ski, cross country ski, bicycle, fish, shop, play golf, go wine tasting, and explore. We hope you enjoy your visit. |
